Sister Agnes Helgenberger
Sister Agnes Helgenberger, formerly a member of Queen of Angels Monastery in Liberty, Missouri, was part of a small ministry team that visited the Clay County Jail on the last Sunday of each month. The group, which included a prison minister, a deacon, a Benedictine oblate, and a Benedictine sister, would spend time in small groups with incarcerated men and women.
During their visits, they would meet with 8–10 inmates for around three hours to pray together and reflect on scripture. On her experience praying with these men and women, she writes, "I truly believe that the prayers of these prisoners and be called 'suffering prayers,' powerful prayers, to our merciful God. I cannot know the feelings of a prisoner, nor do I claim to understand the depth of his or her anxiety. But one thing I can say: the prisoners and teach me how to pray with the prayer of the heart."
