Sister Helen Mueting
Sister Helen Mueting, while on mission in Harlan, Iowa at Covenant Monastery, attended a prayer vigil in support of Delores Klein outside of the Shelby County Jail. She did so alongside fellow sisters and members of the community.
During this time, many farmers were facing bank foreclosures and economic troubles, which were disproportionately affecting rural communities like Harlan, Iowa. Delores Klein was arrested while protesting these issues. After being arrested, she had the option of choosing which two days she would serve in the jail, and she chose the days of the Triduum. In support of her and the demonstration, the community of Harlan gathered for a vigil held outside the jail.
The Covenant Monastery in Harlan was a part of the SPARK (Spiritual Partners and Rural Kinship) committee, which aimed to support the rural committee they were a part of. Being a part of this committee, the sisters of Covenant were active members of these protests during the farming crisis. Sister Helen participated in this vigil for Delores Klein as a way of showing her support through prayer for this cause.
