Sister Juanita Pavlick
Sister Juanita Pavlick taught at the Lansing Correctional Facility for nearly seven years from 1968 to 1975. At the time, she was teaching at Mount St. Scholastica College when the opportunity arose to instruct both guards and inmates at the state institution. She began this work alongside fellow Sisters from the college, including Sisters Laura Haug and Madonna Gampper. Through a partnership with Kansas City Community College, inmates were able to earn college credit for their courses, and in 1970 Sister Juanita began teaching college-level history.
Sister Juanita went on to teach several classes at the penitentiary and remained connected to the ministry even after her time as an instructor ended. Sister Juanita kept in touch with some of her former students through correspondence and continued to support those incarcerated from home. She had even assisted one of her students in his clemency process.
Sister Juanita Pavlick passed away in 2002.
